History
I grew up in the Adelaide Hills. My parents were well-educated Latvian refugees from the second World War, thrown into survival mode by the difficulties of immigration. Despite limited resources, art books appeared in the household. As a child I loved a book called “The Loom of Art” that my sister brought home from her holiday job in a book store. I dreamed of having the tools and skills to make things. As a teenager I played with batik and fabric dying.
The imperative in the family was for all to achieve a University education leading to a career with good financial security. All six of us did just that. I chose Civil Engineering at Adelaide University.
